Gay student gets money for studies

Brandon Perkovich graduated from Community School of Naples this month as valedictorian of a class of 58, with a 4.52 grade-point average on a 4.0-point scale. During his senior year, he took four Advanced Placement classes: biology, English literature, environmental science and statistics; served as class president; and completed a thesis on carbon dioxide emissions produced by people driving to and from the school. He also worked part time and applied to colleges. The 18-year-old is headed to Harvard University to major in microbiology and pre-medicine. He also happens to be gay.

A More Candid Approach To Sex-Ed

The Montgomery County school board yesterday approved new lessons on sexual orientation for use in every middle and high school, introducing homosexuality and gender identity in health classes where they have not been discussed except in response to a question from a student.

Hearing Held In Suit Over Gay Teachings In Schools

School officials in Massachusetts want a federal judge to dismiss a lawsuit that seeks to end gay teachings. The suit by four parents claims Lexington schools are trying to indoctrinate their children about a lifestyle they consider immoral. John Davis, an attorney for the town, argued in court Wednesday afternoon for dismissal. He says teaching diversity is a legitimate state interest and that parents don't have the right to dictate the ideas their children are exposed to in school.

Harassment sparks legal action

The family of a Harper Junior High School student who was harassed by other students because his father is gay is pursuing legal action against the Davis Joint Unified School District. Among the demands is a $100,000 payment for damages.

Six Vassar Students Arrested in Times Square Protest Over "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"

Six Vassar College students were arrested at the Armed Forces Recruiting Station in Times Square. The students were holding a peaceful sit-in to protest the federal policy that denies openly gay Americans the right to serve in the military. They were charged with criminal trespassing.
